Vacation

Hey everyone - no cause for concern. I'm just taking a little vacation. It’s so nice to relax for a change. The weather here is amazing. I’ve been sitting on the beach all day, with the blackberry locked away in the hotel room.

Wednesday

Well, it looks like Zach pulled through. I got an email from him late last night, and he’s finally coming back to the Sates – mission successful. It sounds like a wild trip… karaoke in Tokyo with the bankers, caviar on an oil tanker in the Baltic, mansions buried deep in the Amazon… very James Bond. I can’t wait to get the whole story.

My personal life (finally reemerging) is also great. Thank you all for your advice – turns out you were right.

A short break

First of all, thank you all for your emails and messages of encouragement, care and concern. Since Zach and I started up SecureIDGuard Inc, it's been a non-stop adrenalin rush. I've been working almost round the clock and wish I could respond to all of you personally. It's been a long time since I communicated with anyone, so I’ve started this blog to keep everyone updated on what's going on in my life.

For the first time in months, I went out for breakfast this morning. I'd forgotten how nice it is to sit leisurely in a café, while everybody rushes to grab their morning lattés. After spending so many years in academia, creating a start-up has been a crazy and exciting experience – so much more work than I would ever have guessed - and I'm learning so much. With this phase nearly complete, it feels like I'm nearing the final mile of a marathon, but in reality, it's just the start.

By now, I've built most of our systems, and I'm checking and rechecking everything for any possible bugs. It's exciting to create something that can help so many people, but I have to be absolutely certain that everything is secure – my job is essentially to make sure we have the best ID protection technology in the world. My partner, Zach, is a great guy, and a phenomenal businessman. I've known him since Columbia and he's in charge of finances, marketing, and management.

Zach left the city last Saturday with an ambitious travel itinerary to pitch our business to investors and business clients, and will be gone for the next few weeks. Before he left, he insisted that we go for a macchiato at my favorite espresso bar in Manhattan (the only one he will go to anymore). Maybe he was just wired from the caffeine, but he was definitely more energetic than I've seen him in a long time and we got into some trouble with the staff because he was messing up their display shelves looking at their products. Anyway, it's a bit odd, but I haven't heard from Zach by email or phone since he's left. But I’m sure he’s just busy with travel and meetings.
